Lisbon public transport companies fine non-paying passengers 5 mln euros in 2014

Xinhua, January 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Carris bus company and metro company Metropolitano de Lisboa in the Portuguese capital Lisbon fined around 30,000 non-paying passengers for a total of 5 million euros in 2014, the companies said in a statement Sunday.

Carris fined a total of 18,236 people and Metropolitano de Lisboa fined 11,796 people for failing to buy a ticket for their journeys last year out of a total 1.36 million passengers checked.

However, Carris said only 984 fines were paid last year, or just over 5 percent of the total, and Metropolitano said it received payment in 1,620 cases, or less than 14 percent of the total.

The fine for failing to buy a ticket for a bus journey in Lisbon is of between 180 and 270 euros, whilst failing to buy a ticket to travel on one of Lisbon's funicular railways or lifts ranges from between 180 and 375 euros. Failing to pay on the metro system can cost a passenger between 140 and 210 euros in fines.

Public transport infractions have been considered, since Jan. 1, 2014 to be tax violations in Portugal. Enditem
