UN envoy concerned over attack against Lebanese army

Xinhua, January 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag on Sunday expressed grave concern over Friday's attack on the Lebanese army that led to the deaths of eight officers and soldiers.

Ms. Kaag expressed her condolences to the families of the victims, to the Lebanon Armed Forces (LAF) and to the Lebanese government and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

The special coordinator lauded the LAF's efforts to protect Lebanon's borders, saying that the United Nations will continue to fully support Lebanon to maintain the stability and security in the country.

Fundamentalist gunmen from al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State (IS) launched an attack on Friday against an army post in Tallet al-Hamra on the outskirts of the eastern border town of Ras Baalbek.

The army managed to repel the attack and launched a counter offensive to recapture the strategic post that overlooks the Arsal border town.

Since last August, the army has been confronting the fundamentalists who overran Arsal. After fives days of fierce clashes the militants withdrew back to Syria and kidnapped at least 35 soldiers and policemen. The al-Nusra executed three soldiers later and the IS beheaded another one. Endit
