Scores of Boko Haram militants were killed on Sunday after Nigerian troops repelled massive attacks launched at Maiduguri and other towns in the northeast state of Borno, a security source told Xinhua.

The source who requested anonymity said the Boko Haram fighters who attacked Maiduguri, the state capital in the early hours of Sunday were successfully repelled by security forces stationed in the state.

Many of the militants were also captured with wounds, the source added.

He said an extensive cordon and search is ongoing as part of the mopping-up operation to determine details of the heavy casualties suffered by the terrorists.

The security said a Cobra Armored vehicle, heavy artillery guns, as well as some machine guns and other weapons were captured from the fleeing terrorists.

Three Gulf cars loaded with explosives were also destroyed, the source added.

A Xinhua reporter in the restive state said Nigerian troops in Konduga area of the state successfully repelled terrorists' attacks twice on Sunday.

He said some of the troops lost their lives in the series of operations to repel the terrorists, noting that those that were wounded have been evacuated for appropriate medical treatment.

The reporter said calm has been restored in Maiduguri and Konduga as operation continues with patrols and surveillance.

Meanwhile, a 24-hour curfew imposed in the course of the operation is expected to be lifted as soon as the mopping-up operation is concluded. Endi
