Argentina's Giovanni Simeone emerges as leading scorer

Xinhua, January 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Argentine forward Giovanni Simeone has emerged as the leading scorer of the 2015 South American Youth Championship so far, with six goals.

Simeone's latest goal helped Argentina advance to the final stage of the tournament for players under 20, which will be held in Uruguay's capital Montevideo from Jan. 26 through Feb. 7.

Simeone, the 19-year-old son of Atletico de Madrid coach Diego Simeone, was key in clinching the qualification-stage win Thursday for Argentina in the western city of Colonia.

Argentina is so far the team to beat in this tournament, with a total of 14 goals, followed by Uruguay with nine (after one less match).

In Group A, Argentina, Paraguay and Peru qualified for the finals, while Group B teams Uruguay, Colombia and Brazil made it to the next round.

Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile and Venezuela are out.

The championship's top four teams qualify for the 2015 U-20 World Cup, the best team qualifies directly for the 2016 Summer Olympics, and the runner-up gets to compete in a playoff for a chance to take part in the Olympics. Teams finishing third through sixth, qualify for the 2015 Pan American Games. Endi
