Zambia's governing party candidate maintains lead in presidential election

Xinhua, January 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Zambia's governing party candidate in the country's presidential election has maintained his lead with results from three quarters of the constituencies announced so far, the country's electoral body said on Friday.

Edgar Lungu of the Patriotic Front (PF) has garnered 780,691 votes, or 48.43 percent, from 141 constituencies of the 150 constituencies announced so far, while his closest rival Hakainde Hichilema of the United Party for National Development (UPND) has garnered 752,850 votes, or 46.70 percent, according to official results announced by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).

Justice Ireen Mambilima, the chairperson of the ECZ admitted that the election was very tight and added that the winner will only be declared after receiving the results from the remaining nine constituencies.

She has since reiterated against premature celebrations by supporters of the two presidential candidates, adding that there was currently no winner until the electoral body declares a winner. Endite
