Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, has expressed "profound sadness" at the death of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia, said an AU statement on Friday.

The King died on January 22 at the age of 90.

"King Abdullah was a moderate reformer who has driven his country's political and economic development forward. The King advocated for women's rights particularly in the areas of education, political participation and economic independence," said the statement.

"Under his leadership, Saudi Arabia changed to become more progressive and inclusive," it said.

On behalf of the AU Commission, the chairperson expresses her sincere condolences to the Royal family and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, according to the statement. Endi
