Portugal's public deficit falls more than expected

Xinhua, January 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Portugal's public deficit fell to 7,075 million euros in 2014, according to figures released by the Budget General Directorate on Friday.

The budget deficit fell almost 1,800 million euros in 2014 compared to 2013.

According to the recent estimate by Finance Ministry, the Portuguese government was expecting the deficit to be 7,729 million euros, or 4.4 percent of GDP, 655 million euros below the government's forecast.

According to local media reports, the drop is overall due to record gain in taxes, as the government collected 37,111 million euros in taxes, around 838 million euros more than in 2013. Enditem
