Cambodia rejects Thai media report on border cooperation

Cambodia on Friday denied a Thai media report that the country has agreed to jointly develop villages in a disputed border area with Thailand, saying the news was "untrue".

"Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Tea Banh announces that this information is untrue and would like to clarify that, during a courtesy call by a Thai army delegation on the Cambodian Ministry of Defense, there was no talk on this issue, " said a statement released on Friday.

The rejection came after the Bangkok Post reported Friday that Thailand and Cambodia will jointly develop villages in a contested border area in accordance with newly-inked agreements, citing Thai army chief Udomdej Sitabutr.

Udomdej met with Tea Banh during his visit to Cambodia on Jan. 20 and 21, the Thai newspaper reported.

"Speaking upon his return from a visit to the neighboring country yesterday, Gen. Udomdej said Cambodia had agreed to join forces with Thailand to develop 60 villages on the Chong Arn Ma border crossing (called the An Ses border checkpoint in Cambodia) in Ubon Ratchathani's Nam Yuen district," the newspaper said.
