Iceland boasts top percentage of Internet users in Europe

Regular Internet users account for 97 percent of Iceland's population in 2014, the highest percentage among European countries, according to a survey published by Statistics Iceland on Friday.

The survey showed Internet usage in Iceland increased by almost two percentage points from 2013 to 2014. The average percentage of regular Internet users within the European Union is 75 percent of the population.

According to the survey, 58.9 percent of Icelandic Internet users use their mobile phones or smart phones to connect to the Internet in 2014, up by 11.4 percentage points compared with that of 2013.

E-commerce by individuals also increased considerably, with 67 percent of Internet users having made purchases on the Internet in the past 12 months.

One third of Icelandic enterprises receive orders through the Internet, or other web-based systems in 2013, according to the survey. Endit
