Xinhua, January 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Iraq knocked out Asia's top-ranked Iran in penalty shootout after 3-3 over 120 minutes at the Asian Cup quarter-finals on Friday.

Iraq won the shootout 7-6 after Iran's Vahid Amri hit the post and Iraq's Salam Shakir calmly sent his shot home.

Iran opened the scoring through Sardar Azmoun in the 24th minute but was one man short as Mehrdad Pooladi received a second yellow card just before halftime.

Ahmed Yasin evened the score in the 56th minute for Iraq, which went ahead as captain Younus Mahmood headed home three minutes into extra-time.

Iran's Morteza Pouraliganji made it 2-2 10 minutes later, but Iraq regained the lead through Dhurgham Ismail who converted a penalty.

Iran's Reza Ghoochannejhad headed a stunning equalizer with a minute to go to force the shootout.

Iraq will take on South Korea in Monday's semifinals. Endi
