Crime falls to record low in England, Wales

Xinhua, January 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

About seven million incidents of crime against households and residents aged 16 and over in England and Wales were recorded in the year to September 2014, local authorities said Thursday.

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) on Thursday released that in the year to September 2014, Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) showed around seven million incidents were found, an decrease of 11 percent compared with the previous 12 months.

The ONS also said the number of crimes is the lowest record since the survey launched in 1981. The survey includes a broad range of victim based crimes and crimes which do not come to the attention of the police.

Latest CSEW showed there were 1.3 million violent incidents in England and Wales, which comprised 19 percent of all CSEW crime. The ONS said the number has decreased 66 percent from the peak of violent crime in 1995.

However, crimes reported to the police didn't change too much from the previous year.

The ONS said, in contrast, there were 3.7 million offences recorded by the police in the year ending September 2014 in those areas. Endit
