1st LD: Mubarak's sons released pending retrial in embezzlement case

Xinhua, January 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

An Egyptian court on Thursday ordered the release of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak's two sons, pending their retrial in the presidential palace embezzlement case, official MENA news agency reported.

Last May, the Cairo Criminal Court sentenced Mubarak to three years for embezzling public funds earmarked for the renovation of the presidential palace. His two sons, Alaa and Gamal, were sentenced to four years on the same charge.

On Jan. 13, the Cassation Court annulled their conviction and ordered a retrial.

In addition to the embezzlement case, the former president had also been facing other charges, including conspiring in the killing in 2011 of protesters.

Last November, the Cairo Criminal Court dismissed the killings charges against the 86-year-old Mubarak, his interior minister, and six of his aides. Endit
