Tokyo shares end mixed ahead of European Central Bank's easing decision

Tokyo shares ended Thursday mixed as investors awaited the European Central Bank's decision on a possible monetary easing.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 48.54 points, or 0. 28 percent, from Wednesday at 17,329.02.

On the contrary, the broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange inched 1.18 points, or 0.08 percent, lower at 1,389.43.

Gainers were led by energy and communication issues, while losers were led by rubber.

The turnover was about 2,050.7 billion yen (about 17.36 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
