Iceland's social affairs and housing minister Eyglo Hardardottir referred to recent events in Europe related to the attacks in Paris saying education was the best prevention against prejudice toward immigrants, according to a statement released Tuesday by the country's ministry of welfare.
Hardardottir addressed a meeting held by the Development Fund for Immigration Issues saying it was important for a government to bear in mind that multiculturalism strengthens social infrastructure.
Talking about how to prevent similar anti-immigrant events from happening in Iceland, the minister noted it was necessary to have immigrants from all walks of life participate in social activities since people benefit from diversity as it provides a basis for a multicultural society.
The Development Fund for Immigration Issues has worked out a plan to be carried out from 2015 to 2018. The plan, covering community, family issues, education, and the labor market, specifies 24 projects including the assessment of social attitudes to immigration and multiculturalism and an analysis and measures against the dropouts of immigrant students in secondary schools.
