Thailand's rice exports hit record high in 2014

Thailand exported the highest-ever volume of rice last year and thus regained its status as the world' s top rice exporter, the Commerce Ministry said Monday.

In 2014, the country exported 10.8 million tons of rice, about 64 percent higher than the figure in the previous year, Commerce Minister Chatchai Sarikalya was quoted by the Nation newspaper as saying.

The total value of the exported rice was 5.37 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 22 percent from that of 2013, according to Chatchai.

In 2013, 6.6 million tons of rice, worth 4.42 billion U.S. dollars, was shipped overseas, the minister said, adding Thailand expects to export 10-11 million tons of rice this year. Endi
