World No. 2 Roger Federer beat Chinese Taipei's Lu Yen-Shun 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 to reach the second round of the Australian Open on Monday.

Federer, who has a record 17 Grand Slam titles, will face Italian Simone Bolelli next. The 33-year-old got easy victories in the first two sets and found more resistance from the world No. 47 Lu in the third.

"I thought it was played at a really good level, it was a tough match and I had to step it up," Federer said.

"I've played him a few times so I knew what he can do and he didn't disappoint," he added.

Federer has reached the semifinals for 11 straight years in the Australian Open, however, he hasn't won a major since Wimbledon 2012. Endi
