Suspected Abu Sayyaf militants on Sunday killed an army intelligence officer by ambush in southern Philippines of Sulu, the military said Monday.

Chester Ramos, information officer of Task Group Zambasulta said the victim was aboard his motorcycle when the Abu Sayyaf militants ambushed him at the village of Danag, Patikul town around 6 a.m. local time Sunday.

Ramos said reports from the Joint Task Group Sulu identified the slain soldier as Arjan Punzalan, assigned with the army's Intelligence Service Group (ISG) based in Sulu.

The victim had just came from the residence of his in-law and was bound to Jolo, the capital town of Sulu when he was ambushed and killed by the suspects, according to Ramos.

The 400-strong Abu Sayyaf Group, founded in the early 1990s by Islamic extremists, is a violent Muslim terrorist group operating in the southern Philippines. Endi
