A former top prosecutor of a major city in northeast China was sentenced to life in jail over taking bribes, said a court on Monday.

Dandong Intermediate People's Court in Liaoning Province convicted Zhang Dongyang, former procurator of the People's Procuratorate of Shenyang, the provincial capital, of accepting bribes totalling 10 million yuan (1.6 million U.S. dollars) between 2005 and 2013.

Zhang took the bribes to seek benefits for others when he served as the Communist Party chief of Liaozhong County and the procurator of the Shenyang municipal procuratorate.

All his personal assets and illegal gains were confiscated. Endi
