One dead, several burnt in Bangladesh blockade violence

Xinhua, January 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

A bus helper was burnt to death and dozens of others were either injured or burnt on Sunday in stray incidents of violence during Bangladesh's opposition alliance enforced countrywide non-stop blockade.

The bus helper was burnt to death as miscreants allegedly hurled a petrol bomb at his bus in Barisal district, some 169 south of capital Dhaka, said a police officer from Barisal.

Ex-Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's opposition alliance has been observing the nonstop blockade across the country since Jan. 5, demanding fresh elections under a non-party caretaker government system.

Also on Sunday in another mindless arson attack in Dhaka, two female university students were burnt.

Dozens including police and ruling party men were injured in the street clashes in Commilla district.

Like previous days on Sunday police also reportedly detained dozens of opposition alliance men as they locked horns in chase and counter-chase with the law enforcers.

Scores of cocktails and handmade bombs were reportedly exploded.

A number of vehicles across Bangladesh were smashed or set on fire.

The fresh wave of violence has so far left 24 people dead and several hundred injured as anti-government protesters battled with law enforcers, attacked rivals, torched vehicles and targeted railway since the morning of Jan. 6 when former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's opposition alliance enforced nationwide non-stop rail-road- waterway blockade.
