Floods displace 22, 000 people in central Mozambique

Mozambique's National Institute for Disasters Management opened 14 temporary accommodation centers that are currently taking 22, 000 people displaced from floods in central Zambezia Province.

The authorities are so far distributing food kits in isolated areas and also securing reaction in case there is a breakout of water borne diseases given that significant health unities were forced to close down due to the heavy rains.

"We have at least 5 health unities in the province, and the health authorities are also creating other alternatives to mitigate health needs of the people," said Rita Almeida, spokesperson of the management institute.

The institute says it is currently providing support in clean water, hygiene methods to avoid the breakout of diseases every aspects important to guarantee that the displaced people have the basic to continue to survive.

The victims of the floods are also benefiting from support coming from South Africa.

South Africa and its troops brought helicopters and are distributing nonfood items among them tents, tarpaulins.

According to Almeida, South African troops are also assessing the affected areas to be better informed about the needs of the affected people. Endi
