Portugal suffers biggest box office revenue drop in decade

Portugal suffered its biggest drop in box office takings in 2014 in a decade, Portugal's Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA) said Friday.

In 2004, cinemas saw around 17.1 million spectators compared to 12 million spectators in 2014. This works out to roughly 20 spectators per movie screening last year, according to the ICA.

Overall cinema revenue dropped from 71.1 million euros (about 82 million U.S. dollars) in 2004 to 62.7 million euros in 2014.

The top film seen last year in Portugal was The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1, seen by over 244,075 people.

The top Portuguese film seen last year was Os Maias - Scenes from Romantic Life, by Joao Botelho, which had 114, 817 spectators. (1 euro = 1.15 U.S. dollars) Endit
