Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma has received with shock the tragic news of devastating floods which struck Malawi with serious adverse effects on the country's population, said AU in a statement on Friday.

The Chairperson commiserates with President Arthur Peter Mutharika and the people of Malawi, said the statement.

"This unfortunate calamity has killed about 48 people, destroyed thousands of houses across many districts and leaving thousands of people internally displaced," said the statement.

Dlamini Zuma assured the government and people of Malawi that AU would give the highest priority to providing modest humanitarian assistance to the government as part of efforts to alleviate the suffering of the affected population.

The assistance will be availed to the government as soon as possible, said the statement. Endi
