Fresh gunfight rages in Indian-controlled Kashmir

A fresh gunfight between militants and Indian troops Thursday broke out in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight erupted at Kellar forest area of Shopian district, about 83 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian- controlled Kashmir. "The gunfight has started deep inside forest area of Kellar in Shopian,"said a police official posted in the area."Troops of Indian army and police have been rushed to the area to take on militants present there."

So far, there were no reports of damage to any side in the gunfight.

The gunfight came day after a militant was killed in a similar exchange at Sopore. However, troops or police did not suffered any damage in the gunfight.

Reports said two to three militants are believed to be in the area.Officials said troops cordoned off the area following intelligence inputs about the presence of militants in the area.

A guerilla war has been going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. The gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region. Endi
