UN deploys electoral observers in Burundi

A UN electoral observer mission tasked to watch a series of Burundian elections has started operation in Burundi.

The deployment of the mission illustrates the United Nations' solidarity with Burundi and its commitment to helping with peace consolidation and democracy building in the African country, Cassam Uteem, head of the mission, told a launching ceremony in Bujumbura on Monday.

Uteem called for shared responsibility of the United Nations and the Burundian government in ensuring the credibility and transparency of the elections.

At the request of the Burundian government, the UN mission will monitor a series of elections between May and September, including the presidential poll on June 26.

Uteem, a former Mauritian president, asked stakeholders to respect the results of the elections. Endi
