EU's neighborhood policy should be more flexible: commissioner

Xinhua, January 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

European Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy Johannes Hahn said on Monday that he believed the policy should be more flexible and tailor made to the needs of both European Union (EU) and its neighbor countries.

Hahn made the remarks during his visit to Poland on Monday to discuss matters concerning eastern part of the European Union and its neighborhood.

In Warsaw, Hahn met with Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski, Minister of Foreign Affairs Grzegorz Schetyna and Speaker for Sejm Radoslaw Sikorski.

In his meeting with Polish high officials, the talks focused on the situation in the eastern neighborhood of the EU, especially Ukraine, and on the planned Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga, planned for May 2015.

Another important issue discussed was the recent political situation in Ukraine. The EU, together with Ukraine's government, is currently working on a common "road map" that would allow that country to take advantage of EU's aid.

Hahn mentioned last week's European Commission's proposition of a new program of financial assistance for Ukraine, valued at 1.8 billion euros. The assistance would take the form of loans and be aimed at improving Ukrainian balance of payment. Endit
