Bulgaria seizes 11.2 kg of heroin at border with Turkey

Xinhua, January 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian customs officers have seized 11.2 kg of heroin at the country's Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint near the border with Turkey, officials said here on Monday.

According to the National Customs Agency (NCA), the officers found the illicit drug in a Bulgaria-registered truck carrying wood panels from Turkey to Bulgaria, and driven by a Turkish citizen.

The heroin, split into 22 packets, was placed in the driver's cabin, hidden in a bag behind the rear seat and in the refrigerator, NCA said.

Authorities estimated the value of the heroin on the black market would exceed 600,000 U.S. dollars.

The Balkan country is a key transit route for drugs smuggled from Asia to Europe. In 2014, Bulgaria has seized more than one ton of heroin, 50 tons of marijuana, 100 kg of cocaine and half a ton of synthetic drugs. Endit
