1st LD: Two dead as suicide bomber hits police station in Nigeria: witnesses

Xinhua, January 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

A suicide bomber and a police officer on duty died on Saturday in an attack targeting a police station in Potiskum town of northeastern Nigeria's state of Yobe, witnesses said.

The suicide bomber, which had earlier evaded security checks within the metropolis, detonated his bomb at the entrance of the police station when the deceased police officer was carrying out routine security checks on the bomb-laden vehicle, said a witness named Ashir Ibrahim.

"Other people were injured but details of their condition are sketchy for now," he said.

Another witness said the vehicle had earlier drawn suspicion before it arrived at the gate of the police station.

No official statement has so far been issued on the incident, which occurred few hours after a suicide bomb attack claimed at least 20 lives at a poultry market in Maiduguri, capital of Borno State, which shares boundary with Yobe in the northeastern region of Nigeria, Africa's most populous country.

Witnesses said the two attacks might be perpetration of Boko Haram, a militant group in the West African country. The group seeks to enshrine the Islamic Sharia law in the constitution of Nigeria. Endi
