Singaporean leaders strongly condemn deadly attack on French magazine

Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Thursday "strongly condemned" the terrorist attack on the office of a Paris magazine Charlie Hebdo, which killed 12 people.

On his facebook, Lee said he "was shocked to learn of the brutal attack", adding that he had written to French Prime Minister Manuel Valls to offer condolences to the families of victims.

"It is yet another reminder of the threat posed by terrorism to all civilized societies, and that it is totally wrong to invoke religion to justify such savagery," he wrote.

Singaporean President Tony Tan also wrote French President Francois Hollande a letter to convey his condolences and sympathies to victims and families.

"As France mourns the victims, may the perpetrators be brought to justice swiftly, and may the wounded have a speedy recovery," he wrote.

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, who also sent his condolences through facebook on Thursday, said that Singapore has stepped up security patrols and surveillance in relevant areas, adding that "Singaporeans can also help by reporting any suspicious activities to the authorities." Endi
