Atletico beats Madrid 2-0 in Copa as Torres makes return

Xinhua, January 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

Fernando Torres got his first win with Atletico Madrid over city rival Real Madrid on Wednesday, when the striker returned to his boyhood club in an impressive 2-0 victory in the Copa del Rey.

Midfielder Raul Garcia converted a 57th minute penalty in the first leg match of the Copa's last 16, before Jose Gimenez headed Atletico's second goal in the 76th.

Torres went off in the 59th to applause at Vicente Calderon Stadium, four minutes before Madrid sent on Cristiano Ronaldo to try and spark a comeback.

"It feels good, as it always does when you beat a rival," Torres said. "I'm happy for many things, for my return, for the team's victory, and for the great atmosphere in the stands."

Torres returned to Atletico on loan from AC Milan during the winter transfer window. He never beat Madrid in nine games in his first stint with Atletico.

Madrid, meanwhile, has lost back-to-back games after finishing 2014 with a Spanish record of 22-game winning streak. Endi
