The steam locomotive manufactured by Chinese workers for the 12-km-long Tangshan-Xugezhuang Railway in 1881. The latter half of the 19th century saw the Westernization Movement in China, initiated mainly by Qing bureaucrats to introduce the techniques of capitalist production just for the purpose of propping up the tottering Qing government. The Tangshan-Xugezhuang Railway was chaired to be built by the Westernization Movement's initiators. [File photo] |
