10,000 Stranded as Traffic Jams on Highway

Traffic queues on an expressway in Guangyuan City, southwest China's Sichuan Province Tuesday December 22, 2009. Qipanguan (Chessbord Pass), a chronic bottleneck on the main artery connecting the inland province with northern China, has come to a standstill leaving more than 10,000 travelers stranded. On December 15 the local traffic control agency issued a rule ordering alternative-day road access for inward and outward vehicles, but the order was lifted December 22 following the backlog, according to Chengdu Evening Newspaper.
