Thirty-three new cases of A/H1N1 flu have been confirmed during the past two days in Florida, bringing the total number of the confirmed cases to 101 in the southern state of US, a local health official said on Monday.

Last Friday, the total number of the confirmed cases in the state is 68, according to health department spokesman Tim O'Connor, who said most of the patients have stayed home and taken their medications and already recovered from the flu.

Nationwide, the number of confirmed and probable cases of A/H1N1 flu has risen to 5,123 in 48 states, with at least five deaths, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC).

A/H1N1 flu has caused international panic since news surfaced last month of people dying of the virus in Mexico. Schools closed and sporting events were cancelled in the United States where cases were found.

Anne Schuchat, director of the CDC's center for immunization and respiratory diseases, warned on Monday that the number of confirmed cases in the United States may be only the "tip of the iceberg."

"Unfortunately based on the trends we're seeing, we do expect more illness, more hospitalizations, and more deaths," Schuchat said.

Although only 200 patients with the virus have been hospitalized in the United States so far, the CDC official warned that "things could change quickly and we do continue our efforts to prepare, particularly for the fall, where history tells us we might have a second wave of this virus."
