Fiji's Health Ministry may have officials board aircraft to brief incoming travelers on the Influenza A (H1N1) virus and is considering securing up to 400 hotel rooms in the Nadi International Airport vicinity for quarantine purposes as part of preventative measures against the virus.
Health permanent secretary Sala Saketa said the ministry and the National Task Force on the Influenza A (H1N1) may have to look at the option of having health personnel board the aircraft to announce health messages before passengers disembark.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved the use of the (airport) VIP rooms for immediate isolation of passengers while more work needs to be done on the current facility. This has to be expedited as a matter of priority by airport authorities and the Ministry of Health is willing to share costs if need be," the Fijilive quoted Saketa as saying on Thursday.
Health media liaison officer Iliesa Tora said the ministry is also working with tourism stakeholders on the possibility of securing at least 400 rooms close to the Nadi International Airport in case the facility is needed for carrying out mass quarantine of passengers.
Saketa said during this preparatory stage and since the World Health Organization had elevated Fiji's alert level from phase four to phase five, it is also important that protective equipment such as masks, gloves and gowns are available for border control officers.
There are no confirmed cases of Influenza A in Fiji.
One of two suspected samples on Wednesday night tested positive for the usual seasonal flu.
