A delegation of the Palestinian Islamic Hamas movement arrived on Monday for talks with Egyptian mediators on a durable ceasefire with Israel.
During the two-day visit to Egypt, the Hamas delegation led by Emad Al-Almi is likely to have talks with Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman, who is in charge of the mediation talks between Israel and Hamas-led Palestinian groups.
The Hamas team is expected to announce the stance of the Palestinian movement on Egyptian proposals for a durable ceasefire with Israel and the resumption of an inter-Palestinian national unity dialogue, said the Egyptian MENA news agency.
Egypt has proposed a "lasting" truce between Israel and Palestinian militant groups as of Feb. 5 and a fresh bout of the inter-Palestinian dialogue on Feb. 22, which was boycotted by Hamas last November.
Meanwhile, Hamas said on Monday that it accepted a one-year truce with Israel for lifting the blockade on Gaza and reopening the border crossings.
Fawzi Barhoum, Hamas spokesman in Gaza, told reporters that a Hamas delegation which arrived in Cairo on Sunday will inform senior Egyptian security officials that they accept a one-year truce with Israel.
While confirming that Hamas accepted a one-year truce with Israel, the spokesman also noted that an idea to extend the truce to another half year "has first to be debated and discussed by Hamas leadership."
A six-month truce between Hamas and Israel brokered by Egypt expired on December 19. One week after it expired, Israel carried out a 22-day large-scale military assault on Gaza.
Earlier in the day, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak held talks with visiting Palestinian National Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas on Gaza situation and the long-stalled inter-Palestinian dialogue.
