US Backs Greater Voice for Emerging Economies

The United States says it supports increasing voting rights, of emerging economies in the IMF, the World Bank, and other international organizations.

US Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner, made the remarks in Pittsburgh at the start of the G20 summit on Thursday. He called the move a necessary shift, which could be achieved if all members of the G20 agree.

Geithner also noted that Washington is determined to "sustain the dollar's role as the principle reserve currency in the international financial system."

He said the US must restore confidence in its financial system in order to maintain the dollar's position.
