German Chancellor Angela Merkel is urging the Group of 20 leaders to agree to new concrete regulations for financial markets, and to not let themselves be sidetracked by other economic themes.
Speaking shortly before her departure for a two-day G20 summit in Pittsburgh, Merkel says the world's leading countries were making progress on financial reform but warned the momentum could fade.
Angela Merkel said, "My view is that we are on a good path but the impetus could fade at any time and we will push hard to try to make sure this doesn't happen."
Merkel also exposed the EU's key issue on the G20 will be the the subject of financial market regulation.
Angela Merkel said,"Pittsburgh will be decisive in determining whether the subject of financial market regulation continues to be a central issue. For us, it is the most important subject at the meeting."
European Commission President Jose Barroso says the new financial regulatory system recently implemented by the European Union could set an example for other countries and regions, and it will play a major impact on international financial reform.
