The US government said on Thursday that financial regulatory reform is the most important topic for the upcoming G20 Pittsburgh summit, which will kick off later in the day.

"I think quite frankly it will be financial regulatory reform," said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs when asked to describe the most vital item for G20 action.

He said US President Barack Obama will make efforts to achieve more consensus in this area.

"I think it will be an international consensus on taking steps, many of which are being proposed by the United States, again, to ensure stability in the financial system," he told the media on the Air Force One flight from New York to Pittsburgh.

"Obviously the president is going to spend a lot of time over the fall working on financial regulatory reform," Gibbs added.
