The Least Developed Countries (LDCs) on Wednesday called on developed countries to fulfill their commitments on climate change at the UN climate conference.

Pakalitha Mosisili, prime minister of the Kingdom of Lesotho, delivered a statement on behalf of the LDCs in the high-level segment of the conference on Wednesday.

He said the LDCs supported the objective and spirit of the Kyoto Protocol, which commits developed countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and "future commitments by developed countries should include their obligations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by at least 45 percent by 2020 and by at least 95 percent by 2050 from 1990 levels".

The LDCs would also like to see developed countries fulfill their commitments by supporting the Least Developed Countries in fighting climate change with finance, technology and capacity building, Mosisili said.

He said the impacts of climate change were both massive and devastating for the LDCs, with declining agricultural production and frequent outbreaks of new diseases, as well as the threat to the very existence of some low-lying coastal plains and some small island states.
