Defending champions Myanmar beat hosts Brunei 1-0 to enter ASEAN youth football semis

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Defending champions Myanmar beat host Brunei 1-0 here on Monday night to enter the 6th ASEAN Youth Football Tournament semifinals as Group A winner.

The winning goal came in the 35th minute, leading to Brunei's failure to survive the group. Timor-Leste finished second in Group A.

In Group B, the tournament favorite Singapore were stunned by Cambodia 1-0, but both advanced to the seimifinals.

A total of seven U-22 teams from the Southeast Asian region are competing for the trophy in the biennial tournament.

Group B witnesses Laos, Cambodia and Singapore, while Brunei is in Group A with Thailand, Myanmar and Timor-Leste. The top two finishers of each group advance to the semifinals.

The ASEAN youth football tournament was initiated by Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah back in 1997. The first tournament was won by Indonesia in 2002. Brunei beat rivals Indonesia 2-0 in the 2012 final, but conceded the crown to Myanmar in 2014. Enditem
