Eight caravan migrants allowed to cross U.S. border

LOS ANGELES, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Eight migrants from Central America who traveled by caravan through Mexico to the U.S. border were allowed late Monday to step onto American territory to request asylum.

The first eight migrants were taken in at about 7:30 p.m. local time (0330 GMT Tuesday) after waiting more than a day outside of the facility, according to media reports.

Earlier, about hundreds of migrants with supporters marched from Tijuana, Mexico to the San Ysidro port of entry. Over the weekend, the caravan members set up camp on the Mexico side of the fence, just miles south of San Diego, California.

The caravan drew the attention of U.S. President Donald Trump, who said on Twitter that the vehicle threatened the security and sovereignty of the United States.

"The migrant 'caravan' that is openly defying our border shows how weak & ineffective U.S. immigration laws are," Trump tweeted on Monday. Enditem
