HAVANA, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Cuba's ruling party leader Raul Castro and President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Tuesday together chaired the central event to mark the International Workers' Day in the capital of the Caribbean island state.

They chaired the rally held at the Revolution Plaza in Havana, where thousands of workers and their families had gathered since early morning. The celebrating event was organized by the Confederation of Cuban Workers (CTC) with the slogan "Unity, Commitment and Victory."

The presence of Castro, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) until 2021, was earlier planned and announced in April when he handed presidential power to his successor Diaz-Canel.

Similar rallies were held at major squares across Cuba Tuesday during the Labor Day celebrations. Some 1,500 representatives from 240 trade unions and social movements from more than 60 countries participated, said CTC sources. Enditem
