NEW DELHI, April 10 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and four others injured after a container truck hit a stationary passenger bus in the western Indian state of Maharashtra on Tuesday, police said.

The accident occurred near Charoti on a highway connecting state capital Mumbai with the city of Ahmedabad.

"The private bus coming from neighboring state of Gujarat was parked on the roadside on the highway after it suffered a sudden tyre puncture. The truck rammed into the bus failing to spot it," local police official Jayprakash Gute told the media.

While one passenger died on the spot, five others were admitted to a government hospital with injuries. "One of the injured later died on the way to a hospital in Mumbai, where he was being shifted after his condition worsened," he said.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official added.

As many as 18 labourers were killed Tuesday morning after a vehicle carrying them overturned after suddenly hitting a barricade in the state's Satara district.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles. Enditem
