Jordan calls for more aid to UNRWA

AMMAN, March 26 (Xinhua) -- King Abdullah II of Jordan on Monday called for increased aid to help the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) continue to provide services, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

King Abdullah made the remarks at a meeting in Jordan with UNRWA Commissioner General Pierre Krahenbuhl, where discussions focused on the UN agency after a recent cut in aid by the United States which affected its services to refugees.

Abdullah voiced support to UNRWA, underlining the need of its continued role to refugees.

The king stressed the need for international community to shoulder its responsibility in providing necessary support to the UN agency to continue services in fields of health, education and relief aid.

Krahenbuhl expressed support and appreciation to Jordan and its role in helping UNRWA overcome challenges it is facing.

In January, the United States informed UNRWA that it will cut the aid by 65 million U.S. dollars in a bid to push the agency's "reform." Enditem
