PARIS, March 23 (Xinhua) -- A man claiming allegiance to the Islamic State took several people hostage at a supermarket in southwestern France on Friday, local media reported.

The unidentified man entered a Super U supermarket in Trebes town, and gunshots were heard later, local news channel BFM TV reported.

At least two people have been shot in the incident.

The same individual was suspected of shooting four gendarmes a few minutes earlier while they were jogging in Carcassonne, wounding one.

The Interior Ministry said on Twitter that security officials were carrying out an operation. Enditem
