Italian company to build control tower in Libyan capital's int'l airport

TRIPOLI, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Italy's ENAV on Tuesday launched a project to build a control tower at the Libyan capital Tripoli's M'etiga international airport.

The launch ceremony of the 9-month project was attended by the Libyan minister of transportation, heads of transport projects, civil aviation and airports authorities, and the Italian Ambassador to Libya, Giuseppe Peroni.

"This project comes within a series of ambitious projects that will be implemented in accordance with international standards," said Milad Ma'tug, Minister of Transportation, told Xinhua on the sidelines of the ceremony.

Ma'tug thanked the Italian government for its "unlimited support to the Libyan Government of National Accord."

"Such projects will raise the level of safety of aircraft and passengers alike, as well as increase the technical and financial capabilities of the airport," Ma'tug explained.

The Italian ambassador Peroni said the project came at an excellent time "as we are sending messages to the world that the investment climate in Libya is possible and that there are suitable conditions for work and implementation of infrastructure projects."

Mauro Lannucci, ENAV's Business Development Director, said the project represents a great development of the airport, "as the control tower is brain of the airport. It comes within an agreement signed with Libya two years ago."

"We are proud of working in this project, as it comes at an important time of cooperation with Libya," Lannucci told Xinhua.

Lannucci also said that the Italian embassy in Libya and Libyan authorities are coordinating to provide security conditions for the company to carry out its work.

ENAV is an Italian company specialized in air traffic and navigation services. Enditem
