LONDON, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Juventus tamed Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on Wednesday night in the second leg of Champions League round of 16 as Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala each scored a goal in three minutes.
With a 4-3 aggregate victory, Juventus advanced to the quarterfinals for the third time in the last four seasons.
In another clash of this round, Manchester City conceded a 2-1 loss at home to Basel but progressed to the next stage thanks to their convincing 4-0 victory in the first tie.
With two away goals in the 2-2 draw in the first leg, Tottenham had a slight advantage before they host the Old Lady in Wembley.
The English side challenged Gianluigi Buffon multiple times but the experienced Italian goalkeeper managed to keep clear of a goal.
The efforts by Tottenham finally paid off as their Korean forward Son Heung-Min nailed a finesse shot on the 39th minute.
Coach Massimiliano Allegri called Kwadwo Asamoah and Stephan Lichtsteiner off the bench an hour into the match and the substitution generated immediate fruits.
Four minutes later, Higuain netted an equalizer as he received the pass from Lichtsteiner on the right flank.
In only three minutes, Dybala slotted home a winner in the one-on-one with Hugo Lloris, benefited from the through ball from Higuain.
The deficit forced Tottenham to be more aggressive but Harry Kane's extra-time header was denied by the post.
With this comeback victory, Juventus advanced to the quarterfinals and avoid a fifth elimination against English clubs in the Champions League in the last five encounters.
On the same day, Manchester City was defeated by Basel as Mohamed Elyounoussi scored a brace for the visitors.
With a 4-goal advantage in the first leg, coach Pep Guardiola rested half of his best starting XI on bench.
City had a dream start as Bernardo Silva's low pass from the box gave Gabriel Jesus an easy chance to score.
But Elyounoussi helped the visitor level the game with his blockbuster in the middle lane on the 17th minute. The Norwegian midfielder slotted his second goal in the 71st minute to grab a win for Basel.
Despite the loss, Manchester City still knocked Basel out 5-2 on aggregate, but their 13-game winning streak at the Etihad Stadium was put to an end. Enditem
