BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed mixed on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.24 percent, at 3,444.67 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.73 percent lower at 11,303.97 points. The ChiNext Index, which tracks China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.72 percent to close at 1,742.03 points.

JAKARTA -- Indonesia shares closed higher by 14.8 points, or 0.23 percent, to a level of 6,444.51 on Wednesday.

Some 445,905 transactions were booked, involving 14.4 billion copies of shares with a value of 9.8 trillion rupiah (about 733.6 million U.S. Dollars).

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) went down 0.23 percent or 8.3 points to close at 3541.91.

A total of 2.12 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 1.42 billion Singapore dollars (about 1.07 billion U.S. dollars). Losers outnumbered gainers by 256 to 198.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended higher here on Wednesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,828.63 up 2.60 points or 0.14 percent, and the Emas was at 13,191.73 up 3.69 points or 0.03 percent.

NEW DELHI -- India's Sensex Wednesday crossed the 35,000 mark, local media said.

"The markets continued its record-breaking spree in the New Year and the Sensex hit the 35,000 milestone today," a local news channel NDTV said.

The benchmark index rose over 200 points to a fresh high of 35,002.78 while the Nifty surged to 10,761 at day's high.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 120.42 points on Wednesday, down 1.17 points or 0.96 percent against the previous trading session.

Over 75.871 million shares worth some 1.179 trillion Vietnamese dong (some 52.6 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Wednesday, an increase of 17.8 percent in volume and 32.2 percent in value against the previous trading session.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in south Vietnam, closed at 1,034.69 points on Wednesday, down 28.27 points, or 2.66 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 332.610 million shares worth 8.667 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (387.11 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange. Prices of 68 stocks went up, 220 stocks fell down, while 46 stocks remained unchanged.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.18 percent lower on Wednesday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index decreased by 16.14 points to 8,848.99. The all-share index went down by 5.78 points, or 0.11 percent, to 5,121.47.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Wednesday as a firm yen against the U.S. dollar impacted exporter issues and prompted investors to secure profits.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 83.47 points, or 0.35 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 23,868.34.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended lower Wednesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) shed 6.31 points, or 0.25 percent, to settle at 2,515.43. Trading volume stood at 333.5 million shares worth 6.2 trillion won (5.8 billion U.S. dollars).

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market ended lower on Wednesday, with the underperformance pointing to further weakness and the day's pressure mostly on the mining sector.

At the close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 stock index was down 32.8 points or 0.54 percent at 6,015.8, while the broader All Ordinaries index slipped 31.6 points or 0.51 percent at 6,134.3.
