Kenya to enter two teams at Africa Club Championships in Ghana

Xinhua,January 09, 2018 Adjust font size:

NAIROBI, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Kenya will enter two clubs in the Africa Cup of Club Championship set for Jan. 20-28 in Accra, Ghana.

Women's defending champions Telkom will be joined by Strathmore University side for the weeklong tournament in West Africa.

However, Kenya will miss out on the men's side with no team competing after Strathmore, who won the league last season, pulled out citing financial constraints.

Telkom coach Jos Openda said he expects a strong challenge from Egyptian and Ghanaian teams but remained buoyant he will weather the storm and retain the title.

"The teams are all strong and have improved. But we are not taking any chances and have done more in training and polished on areas that need to be worked on. The draw is out and we know who our opponents are," he said on Monday in Nairobi.

Organizers have announced that only 12 teams will compete in the tournament.

Ghana Revenue Authority and Trustees from Ghana, defending champions Eastern Company Hockey Club and El Sharkia from Egypt, Niger Flickers Hockey Club and Police Machine from Nigeria will compete in the men's competition.

In the women's counterpart, there are Ghana Revenue Authority, Police, Nigerian sides KADA Queens, Yobe Desert Queens as well as the two Kenyan teams. Enditem
