25 shot in Chicago over Christmas weekend

CHICAGO, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- A total of 25 people were shot from Friday afternoon to Tuesday morning in the U.S. city of Chicago, a sharp decrease from 61 people who were shot in the same period last year.
According to data kept by the Chicago Tribune, of the 25 people shot this year, five were shot fatally, as against 11 in 2016.
One person was killed on the South Side just after midnight on Christmas Day, whereas seven people were killed on Christmas Day alone in 2016.
On Christmas Day in previous years, three were killed in 2015, one in 2014 and two in 2013, according to the data.
On Christmas Eve this year, a 37-year-old man was fatally shot while trying to rob a shopper in the South Loop neighborhood. The shopper held a concealed carry license from Indiana and shot the robber, police said.
The data also showed that 35 people were shot, seven fatally, during the four-day Christmas weekend in 2014; 29 were shot, seven fatally, over the Christmas weekend In 2015.
As of Tuesday, there have been 665 homicides and 3,534 people shot, as against 4,300 people shot during Christmas 2016, in the third largest city in the United States. Enditem
