LONDON, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- First Secretary of State of the British government Damian Green on Wednesday stepped down from the position amid allegations that pornographic material was found on a Commons computer nine years ago.

Green, one of the British Prime Minister Theresa May's closest allies, resigned after he was found to have made "inaccurate and misleading" statements about what he knew about claims that pornography had been found on a computer in his Commons office in 2008.

The latest development came amid an array of resignations of the British government cabinet members over the past months for sex-related allegations.

Green, who had earlier denied the allegations, apologized in his resignation letter.

May said in a letter responding to Green's resignation that she is with "deep regret."

Green had been the subject of an inquiry after a woman alleged that he made inappropriate advances to her, claims he strenuously denies. Enditem
